Anterior Hip Replacement

Less Invasive. Faster Recovery.

What is Anterior Hip Replacement?

The word anterior means “front”. In anterior hip replacement surgery, the hip joint is accessed from the front of the hip, rather than from the side or back, known as the posterior approach.

Why Anterior Hip Replacement?

Minimizes muscle damage

Anterior hip replacement avoids cutting major muscles. There are fewer muscles at the front of the hip, allowing Dr. Eggert to separate muscle fibers, rather than cutting through them or detaching muscles from bones.

Reduced post-operative pain

Anterior hip replacement surgery doesn’t require cutting major muscles, helping patients to experience less pain after surgery and lower pain medication usage.

Faster recovery time

Anterior hip replacement can typically expect a hospital stay of only 1-2 days. After surgery, patients are able to bend at the hip and bear weight when it’s comfortable. A recent study found that anterior hip replacement patients walked unassisted six days earlier than other hip replacement patients.

Better range of movement

Bend over or sit with your legs crossed without risking a hip dislocation. Most hip replacement patients worry that their new hip’s ball and socket will dislocate. With anterior hip replacement surgery, muscles and tissue that naturally prevent hip dislocation are not disturbed.

Potential Cost Savings

One advantage of anterior hip replacement surgery can be financial. Faster recovery times translate into saving thousands of dollars in medical bills, compared with traditional hip replacement surgery. Plus, patients who work may be able to return to their job sooner, typically within three to four weeks after their procedure.
